Credit Card Interest in Brazil: The Rotativo, the Minimum Payment and the 100% Cap

By PointsExplainedLast reviewed

Pay the full bill when you can

The full amount is the default payment option on the bill; paying it keeps you out of the rotativo.

If you can't, compare the options on the bill

The payment-alternatives area lists financing options with monthly and annual rates and the CET, ordered from the lowest total cost.

Ask for the DDC

The Documento Descritivo do Crédito shows your original debt, interest charged so far and how much more can still be charged under the 100% cap.

Consider portability

You can move the card debt, including amounts already in installments, to another institution, and the original creditor can't charge you for the portability; the BCB says the process can take up to 7 business days.

Escalate if the numbers look wrong

Contact the issuer's service channel and ombudsman (ouvidoria), and if unresolved, register a complaint with the Banco Central or a consumer body.

Questions

About this guide

Does the 100% cap apply to purchases in installments with interest?

No. The Banco Central says the cap covers the rotativo and bill installment plans for debts originating from 3 January 2024, but not purchases made in installments with interest.

How long can a balance stay in the rotativo?

Under Resolução CMN nº 4.549, only until the due date of the following bill. After that, the remaining balance can be financed in installments only on terms more advantageous than the rotativo.

Can my issuer charge me for paying my bill early?

No. The Banco Central says early settlement of the bill, in full or in part, is a right, no fee can be charged for it, and the discount must use the contracted interest rate.

Can the minimum payment change?

Yes, but Resolução BCB nº 96 requires any definition or change of the contractual minimum to be communicated to you at least 30 days in advance.
