File Nº 06 — Brazil Loyalty Programs

Loyalty programs, on the record.

Airline, hotel, bank, and coalition programs in Brazil — how each kind works, and a ledger of program records as they are entered. Where a figure is not on record, the cell says so instead of guessing.

Point value is minor units per point (centavos). A single figure is the program's own published rate; a range marked “estimate” is our editorial judgment, with no published source, shown low to high exactly as the points calculator states it. An em dash means the figure is not on record — it is not a zero.

Taxonomy

Four kinds of program

Every program in the ledger is one of these. The kind decides how you earn, and how flexible the points are when you spend them.

i.

Airline

Frequent-flyer programs. Miles are earned by flying and by card spending, and redeemed for flights with the airline and its alliance partners.

ii.

Hotel

Hotel chains' own currencies. Points come from stays and co-branded cards, and go toward free nights and elite-status perks.

iii.

Bank rewards

Banks' transferable points. Earned on card spending, and usually movable to several airline and hotel programs — which is where their flexibility comes from.

iv.

Coalition

One currency shared across many merchants — earn at the grocery store, redeem at the pump. Common in some markets, through supermarket or fuel loyalty schemes.

Questions

Programs, explained plainly

What kinds of loyalty programs exist in Brazil?

Four kinds: airline frequent-flyer programs, hotel programs, banks' transferable points currencies, and coalition programs shared across many merchants. They differ mainly in how you earn and how flexible the points are when you redeem — bank points that transfer to several partners are the most flexible.

How do loyalty programs work?

Loyalty programs reward repeat business with airlines, hotels, banks, and retailers. You earn points or miles through purchases, flights, stays, and credit card spending, then redeem them for flights, hotel nights, merchandise, or statement credits. Many programs also run elite-status tiers with extra benefits such as lounge access or priority boarding.

How much is a loyalty point worth?

It depends on the program and on how you redeem. The same point is usually worth more on flight or hotel redemptions — especially transfers to airline partners — than on merchandise or gift cards. There is no single fixed value, and valuations shift when programs change their award pricing, so work out the value of your own redemption: divide the cash price of what you are booking by the points it costs.

Can I transfer points between different programs?

Often, yes. Bank points programs typically let you move points to a list of airline and hotel partners, at ratios that vary by partner. Airline and hotel currencies rarely transfer out. Check the program's own published partner list and its current transfer ratio before you commit — transfers are one-way and usually irreversible.

What is the difference between airline miles and bank points?

Airline miles live inside one airline's program and can only be spent there and with its partners. Bank points are earned on card spending and can usually be transferred to several airline and hotel programs, which makes them more flexible — you can wait and pick the partner with the best award price for your trip.
