What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files stored on your device by your web browser when you visit a website. They serve various purposes, from remembering your preferences to understanding site usage patterns.
PointsExplained sets one cookie, pe-country. It sets no analytics, advertising or social media cookies, and it loads no third-party script that could set them.
It also keeps a few small items in your browser's localStorage and sessionStorage. Unlike cookies, these are not sent to our server with each request; they stay on your device.
Everything the site stores in your browser
| Name | Type | Purpose | Kept for |
|---|---|---|---|
| pe-country | Cookie | Remembers which country edition you are reading (for example “ca” or “uk”), so the home page sends you back to it. | 90 days |
| pe_cookie_consent | localStorage | Your answer to the cookie banner: the categories you allowed, when you answered, and the country edition you answered in. | Until you clear it; the banner asks again after 6 months or when you switch country |
| pe-popup-dismissed | localStorage | Remembers that you closed the newsletter pop-up, so it stays closed. | 7 days |
| pe-email-captured | localStorage | Remembers that you subscribed through the pop-up, so it is not shown again. | Until you clear it |
| pe-quiz-{country} | sessionStorage | Your quiz answers (for example pe-quiz-ca), so refreshing the page does not lose them. They stay in your browser. | Until you close the tab |
All of these are set by PointsExplained itself (first-party). Signing in to the private admin area (site operators only) sets Supabase sign-in cookies whose names begin with “sb-”. No reader is ever asked to sign in, so readers never receive them.
The cookie banner offers “Analytics” and “Marketing” categories. The site loads no analytics or marketing tool, so allowing them switches nothing on today; your answer is simply recorded in pe_cookie_consent.
Third-party cookies
PointsExplained sets no third-party cookies. There is no Google Analytics, no advertising tracker and no social media pixel on the site.
When you follow a link to a card issuer's website, that site may set its own cookies under its own privacy policy. We have no control over cookies set on other domains.
How to manage cookies
On PointsExplained
You can manage your cookie preferences at any time using our cookie consent banner, which appears when you first visit the site. To change your preferences later, clear your pe_cookie_consent entry from your browser's localStorage, and the banner will reappear on your next visit.
In your browser
Most browsers allow you to control cookies through their settings. Here are links to cookie management instructions for common browsers:
Clearing localStorage
To clear localStorage data set by PointsExplained, open your browser's Developer Tools (usually F12 or Cmd+Option+I), navigate to the Application or Storage tab, find localStorage for pointsexplained.com, and delete the relevant entries.
Note: Blocking essential cookies may prevent the Site from functioning properly. For example, disabling the pe-country cookie may cause you to be redirected to the wrong country version on each visit.
Consent requirements by jurisdiction
The cookie banner follows the model local privacy law expects. Because the site sets nothing non-essential today, the banner records your answer and changes nothing else.
| Country | Applicable Law | Consent Model | What the banner does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canada | PIPEDA + Quebec Law 25 | Opt-in | Asks before anything non-essential is set |
| United States | CCPA/CPRA | Opt-out | Lets you turn non-essential categories off |
| United Kingdom | UK GDPR + PECR | Opt-in | Asks before anything non-essential is set |
| Australia | Privacy Act 1988 | Opt-out | Lets you turn non-essential categories off |
| Brazil | LGPD | Opt-in | Asks before anything non-essential is set |
| India | DPDP Act 2023 | Opt-in | Asks before anything non-essential is set |
| Portugal | GDPR + ePrivacy | Opt-in | Asks before anything non-essential is set |
Your consent preferences expire after 6 months, at which point you will be asked again. If you change your country, your consent is automatically reset to comply with the new jurisdiction's requirements.
