Privacy Policy
PointsExplained collects very little: your email address if you subscribe, one cookie that remembers your country, and the request logs every website host keeps. This page lists all of it.
Last updated: September 25, 2026
1. Who we are
PointsExplained ("we," "us," or "our") operates the website pointsexplained.com and its country editions. It is an independent credit card comparison site, operated from Canada.
The site publishes editions for 7 countries: Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, India, and Portugal. This policy applies to every visitor, wherever you are.
For privacy questions, email privacy@pointsexplained.com.
2. Data we collect
Information you choose to give us
- Email address โ only if you subscribe through a newsletter form (in the site footer, the pop-up on guide and news pages, or the referral page). We store the address with a country code, a subscription status, and the dates you subscribed and, if you do, unsubscribed.
- Quiz answers โ your spending, goal, credit range and preferences. Your quiz answers are sent to our server to compute your ranking and are not stored in our database. Your browser keeps a copy for the session (see Section 5), and the results page puts them, encoded, in its web address so a result can be reloaded or shared. Anyone you share that link with can see those answers.
- Emails you send us โ if you write to one of our addresses, we have your email address and your message.
Information collected automatically
- Approximate country โ our host, Vercel, tells our server which country a request comes from, worked out from your IP address. We use it only to choose a country edition, and remember that edition in the
pe-countrycookie. - IP address โ the quiz and newsletter forms count requests per IP address to stop abuse. The count lives only in the memory of the server that handled the request and is never written to disk or to our database.
- Request logs โ like any web host, Vercel records each request (IP address, page, time, browser type) to run and secure the service.
We run no analytics or advertising tools. There is no analytics service, tag manager, advertising pixel or social media tracker on this site.
Information we do NOT collect
- Credit card numbers or financial account details
- Your income, credit score, or credit application
- Government-issued identification
- Precise geolocation (GPS coordinates)
- Social media login information
- Biometric data
3. How we use your data
| Purpose | Data used |
|---|---|
| Show your country's edition | Approximate country from Vercel; pe-country cookie |
| Compute your quiz ranking | Quiz answers (used for the request, not stored) |
| Keep the newsletter list and email subscribers | Email address, country code, status, dates |
| Answer your emails | Your email address and message |
| Prevent abuse | IP address, counted in server memory only |
| Run and secure the site | Vercel request logs |
We do not sell your personal information, share it for advertising, or use it for automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you. The quiz ranking is computed automatically, but it is a list of cards to read, not a decision about you.
4. Third-party services
These are the outside services the site uses, and what each one receives:
Vercel
Privacy policyHosting. Serves every page and runs the site's server code.
Data processed: Your IP address and browser details with each request, including the approximate country Vercel derives from your IP address. Vercel keeps request logs under its own policy.
Location: Global edge network; the site's server functions run in the United States (Washington, D.C. region)
Supabase
Privacy policyDatabase. Holds the card catalogue and the newsletter list.
Data processed: Newsletter subscribers only: email address, a country code, subscription status and the dates you subscribed or unsubscribed.
Location: United States (AWS us-east-1)
Resend
Privacy policyEmail delivery, when the site emails a subscriber.
Data processed: Your email address and the message sent to it. The only message the site sends to subscribers is a one-off welcome email.
Location: United States
Sanity
Privacy policyContent management for news and guide pages.
Data processed: No reader data. Pages fetch editorial content from it on our server.
Location: United States / EU
Upstash
Privacy policyRate limiting for the newsletter sign-up, confirm and unsubscribe links, and for the outbound-link redirect (/api/go), which no page currently links to.
Data processed: The IP address of a request to those endpoints, as a rate-limit counter that expires within minutes.
Location: Upstash's hosting (see its privacy policy)
When you follow a link to a card issuer's website, you leave PointsExplained and that site's own privacy policy applies. We have no affiliate partnerships, and issuers send us no information about you or any application you make.
6. Data retention
| Data | How long |
|---|---|
| Newsletter address | Kept until you ask us to delete it. Unsubscribing marks it unsubscribed so it receives no email; it does not delete the record. To have it deleted, email privacy@pointsexplained.com. |
| Quiz answers | Not stored by us. Your browser's copy is cleared when you close the tab. |
| IP address in the rate limiter | A counter in Upstash (or, when Upstash is not configured, in server memory) that expires within minutes; never written to our database |
| Vercel request logs | Kept by Vercel under its own retention policy |
| pe-country cookie | 90 days |
| Cookie-banner answer | In your browser; the banner asks again after 6 months |

Cross-border disclosure: the providers in Section 4 process data outside Australia, including in the United States.
