Credit Scores and Credit Reports in India: How They Work

By PointsExplainedLast reviewed

Request your free reports

Ask each of the four credit information companies for your free full credit report for the calendar year. RBI requires each to provide one, with your score, in electronic form after verifying who you are.

Check your details and accounts

Confirm your personal details and identification numbers, such as your PAN, then check every account listed and the limits and amounts shown for it.

Check who has accessed your report

RBI requires CICs to alert you by SMS or email when a lender or other specified user accesses your report, where they hold your contact details. Access you don't recognise could point to an application made in your name.

Dispute mistakes in writing

Complain to the lender or the CIC and keep the complaint number. If it is not resolved within 30 calendar days, RBI's compensation rule applies, and you can escalate to the RBI Ombudsman.

Questions

About this guide

How many free credit reports can I get each year?

RBI requires each credit information company that holds a credit score for you to give you one free full credit report, including your score, once per calendar year. With four registered companies, that is up to four free reports a year.

Will a payment made a day late be reported to the bureaus?

Under RBI's card directions, an issuer can report a card account as past due only when it has been past due for more than three days, counted from the payment due date on your statement.

Does a card I haven't activated show on my report?

No. RBI's directions say an issuer must not report credit information about a new card account to a credit information company before the card is activated.
