Credit Card Fees and Charges in India, and the RBI Rules That Limit Them

By PointsExplainedLast reviewed

Read the Key Fact Statement and MITC

Find the annual fee, APRs, late payment charges, cash advance fee and foreign currency charges for your card before you use it.

Automate at least the minimum payment

Set up autopay so a busy month never turns into a late payment charge; watch for the pre-debit notification.

Avoid cash withdrawals

Cash advances can carry both a fee and interest from the day of withdrawal, as they do at SBI Card. Use a debit card or UPI for cash needs.

Watch for notices of fee changes

Issuers must give at least one month's notice of changes in charges. If a change works against you, you can close the card without an extra charge once your dues are paid.

Questions

About this guide

Can a bank charge a late fee on my whole bill?

No. RBI's directions say late payment charges are levied only on the amount outstanding after the due date, not on the total amount due, and only once the account has been past due for more than three days.

Can my card's fees be raised without warning?

No. Changes in charges must be prospective and need at least one month's prior notice. If the change is to your disadvantage, you can surrender the card without an extra closure charge, subject to paying your dues.

Will I be charged interest on the GST or fees on my bill?

RBI's directions bar issuers from capitalising unpaid taxes, levies or charges, meaning they cannot levy interest or other charges on them.
