Block the card

Use your issuer's round-the-clock reporting channel as soon as you notice a loss, theft or unfamiliar payment.

Report the payment in writing

Tell the issuer which transaction you did not authorise, keeping within 13 months of the debit date.

Keep records

Save statements, messages and the dates you reported the problem.

Escalate if needed

If the issuer does not resolve it, complain to Banco de Portugal or use one of the dispute resolution entities your issuer has joined.

How long do I have to dispute an unauthorised card payment?

Report it without undue delay once you know about it, and no later than 13 months after the debit date. The 13-month limit does not apply if the provider failed to give you the information the law requires about the payment.

Can I cancel a new credit card contract?

Yes. You have 14 calendar days to withdraw from a consumer credit contract without giving a reason, repaying any credit used plus interest within 30 days of your notice.
