File Nº 09 — Canada Tools

Work out what your points are actually worth.

No signup, no email gate, nothing stored. Put in a balance and a programme and you get a range — conservative, typical, optimal — rather than one confident number, because that is the honest shape of the answer.

*every figure on this page is quoted in CAD and priced from the valuations we publish — where we have no valuation, the tool says so instead of guessing.

Tool i — Calculator

What is a point actually worth?

Pick a programme, enter a balance, and read the three figures. Each one is quoted in that programme's own currency, and the rate behind it is on the same line.

Tool ii — Assessment

The gap between a flat card and the best rates.

Set your monthly spending. The headline number and the table beneath it come from one calculation, so they agree by construction.

Ratios, bonuses, minimums and times as recorded in our partner table — follow “Source” to check a route against the programme, which can change it without notice. “Becomes” applies the ratio and any recorded bonus, rounded down; it does not know a programme’s transfer increments. Transfers are one-way and cannot be reversed, so confirm the award you want before you move anything.

Questions

About these numbers

Where do the point valuations come from?

It depends on the programme, and the calculator says which beside every figure. For Scene+, RBC Avion, PC Optimum, and TD Rewards, the rates are quoted from the programme's or the issuing bank's own page, and the quote and a link to that page sit beside the figure; a tier the page does not state reads "Not published" rather than being filled in. For Aeroplan, Amex Membership Rewards (Canada), CIBC Aventura, and Marriott Bonvoy, the figures are our own editorial estimates: we have not quoted them from any programme's page, we hold no source for them, and the calculator labels every one as an estimate. We give a conservative, a typical and an optimal figure because what a point is worth depends on how you redeem it — treat the range, not any one figure, as the answer.

What happens when a figure is not published?

The tools say so instead of filling the gap. In the calculator, a tier the programme's page does not state reads "Not published" — it is never shown as zero or borrowed from the tier beside it. In the assessment, a category with no verified earn rate counts for nothing and is labelled as such, and if no category can be priced the result reads "Not available". A blank is more useful than a number we cannot stand behind.

What does the Points Assessment actually measure?

For each spending category where we hold an earn rate quoted from a card issuer's own product page — 2 of 5 categories on this page — it works out what that one card would earn on your spending over a flat card earning 1 point (or 1%) per unit, applies any annual spend cap the issuer's page states, and values the difference at that programme's own valuation. The other categories are shown as having no verified rate and add nothing. It does not know what your current cards earn — you are not asked, and no card is looked up — so the figure is the gap to one reference card, not a measurement of what you are losing.

Why is a programme priced in a different currency to my page?

Marriott Bonvoy is valued in USD, not in CAD. Where that happens the calculator says so and quotes the figure in USD, and the Points Assessment leaves it unpriced. We do not convert it, because we publish no exchange rate and inventing one would make the number look more precise than it is.

How does the Transfer Partner Finder work?

Search an airline, a hotel or the programme you hold, and it lists every route we have a record of, with the transfer ratio, how long the transfer takes, any minimum transfer, and a link to the page the route can be checked on. Enter a balance and it shows what that balance becomes on each route, rounded down, because programmes do not credit part of a point; it does not model transfer increments. Where we hold no ratio or timing for a route, the cell says "Not on file" rather than guessing. Transfers are one-way and cannot be reversed, so check the award you want before you move anything.

Do you store anything I enter?

No. Every tool on this page runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server, no result is emailed, and no address is collected.
